November 17, 2006, Newsletter Issue #114: Aquifers and Aquitards

1

Tip of the Week

Groundwater moves through pores and spaces in earth materials, but not all earth materials are the same. Certain materials, like sand and gravel or porous rocks like sandstone, transmit water well, and are called aquifers. Other materials, like shale or layers of clay, transmit water poorly and are called aquitards.

There really isnīt a numerical definition for how much water must be transmitted in order for a rock layer to be an aquifer - what might be considered an aquifer in one area might be considered an aquiclude somewhere else.
